History of the White Hart

The White Hart has long been part of Wolvercote’s story, serving as a familiar landmark and a natural meeting place for generations. Its character and heritage remain central to the pub’s identity, and the community run approach keeps that spirit alive. The building continues to offer a
welcoming space where people come together as they always have.
The White Hart is one of Wolvercote’s three surviving pubs and the earliest. Although there has been an inn on the site since the mid-17th century, it has undergone name changes over the years. How do we know this? In the front bar, an ancient and damaged hand-written script in a frame was once discovered, which read:"This is almost certainly the house or cottage that Robert Hall of Wolvercote, a tailor, left to his nephew John Hall of Combe in 1749. By 1763, it was known as the Blue Man; in 1786, it became the Blue Boy. In 1821, it adopted the name the Green Man, under the ownership of J. Collier. The building underwent repairs between 1830 and 1832. In 1834, it transformed into the White
Hart pub, accompanied by a wheelwright shop and a garden, all owned by Henry Hall."
It is likely that the building was constructed from stone sourced from the ruins of Godstow Abbey, so thanks are perhaps due to Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, and Oliver Cromwell for unwittingly providing this facility. In 2013, The White Hart Community Pub Limited was established by Wolvercote residents to manage the White Hart as a community hub.
